IT'S a good thing that director Syafiq Yusof, the son of acclaimed director Yusof Haslam, decided to call his movie Saya Amat Mencintaimu (I love you so much), instead of I Ripped Off The Idea From Fight Club.
Syafiq may have the distinction of being Malaysia's youngest feature film director, but he should know that disguising a movie about mental problem as a romance between colleagues is nothing short of shortchanging viewers.
Viewers will go into theatres expecting a typical romantic storyline, but will instead be subjected to bad acting and a plot that claims to twist their minds, but instead, twists their innards. This is the worst kind of movie, because it doesn't make sense and will leave viewers scratching their heads.
The first part of SAM is about an office romance between Sam (Shaheizy Sam) and Lisa (Lisa Surihani). There are a few scenes with Lisa and a violent ex-boyfriend (Syamsul Yusof) and a dishevelled colleague; both are pining for her.
Meanwhile, viewers will wonder why Lisa falls for Sam. He's just ... plain. Maybe it's because he took her to i-City.
The flick then goes off into Twilight Zone territory. There's a home invasion and, suddenly, Sam wakes up in an abandoned factory (reportedly an old New Straits Times Press printing plant).
Sam fights on and off with a man dressed in black and wearing a welder's face cover. At least, in Fight Club, the person does beat himself up to pulp. Sam just appears dazed and with a few scratches.
The music, meawhile, flip flops between Malay pop (Anuar Zin?) and full-blown Italian opera. The two just don't gel together.

I didn't know who was the director of this flick before I watched it, but the fight scenes were pretty similar to that in KL Gangster. I later found out the connection between Syafiq and his brother Syamsul, who directed KL Gangster.
When the movie couldn't get any worse, it's revealed that the man in black is just a figment of Sam's imagination, that is, he's been fighting with an imaginary character. At that moment, I could have hit myself for spending RM10 to watch this flick at Paradigm Mall GSC, Petaling Jaya.
